Port of King's Lynn - Dredgers.

Dredging at the Port of King's Lynn is now done by UK Dredging.

UK Dredging was established in 1996 as a division of Associated British Ports.

UKD vessels operate around the UK and near continent with operations overseen from UKD's head office in Cardiff.

UKD is backed by the financial strength of ABP, the UK's largest and leading ports group, handling about a quarter of the country's seaborne trade. This strength has allowed UKD to maintain a programme of continued capital investment.

Modern vessels equipped with the latest satellite position-fixing and dredge-monitoring equipment allow UKD to provide an efficient and cost effective service.

UK Dredging (UKD) uses one of the most modern and efficient dredging fleets in the UK. Its highly skilled team and advanced fleet of vessels provide cost-effective and reliable capital and maintenance dredging services, to both its parent company, ABP, and its third-party clients throughout the UK and Europe. From its base in South Wales, UKD carries out over half the annual maintenance dredging requirement of the UK.

UKD has undertaken contracts in the fields of beach replenishment, remedial pipeline works and large-scale construction jobs, together with routine maintenance and capital dredging projects.

In 2010 UKD upgraded its fleet of dredgers with a new vessel, the UKD Orca, a trailing suction hopper dredger, with a hopper capacity of some 2,300 cubic metres.

ABP King's Lynn has been working on ways to reduce the amount of lighting, but improving the lux levels to be more environmentally friendly (reduce carbon emmissions). The new tower installed this week has a total of 4 x 1000watt High Pressure sodium lights. Already four other towers have upgraded with 1000w units. The lighting colums are manufactured by Abacus and are 30 meter high. Two of the origional lattice towers have been adapted with the new lighting. It's expected that the remaining 30m lattice towers will be upgraded in the near future.
