Norwich & District Photographic Society

NDPS History

The Norwich and District Photographic Society is one of the oldest such organisations in the country. It had its beginnings during the middle years of the 19th century. A number of local people with an interest in the science of photography formed the Norwich Photographic Society in June 1854. This society existed for only seven years but during that time it had an influence on the development of photography far greater than its provincial origins merited; there are reports about its meetings in the archives of the Royal Photographic Society.

The present society was formed in 1903. A group of photographers from other organisations such as the YMCA and the Teachers' Field Club, together with a number of interested individuals, met under the guidance of Albert Edward Coe. Since then it has met regularly although during the two world wars activities were curtailed and the Annual Exhibitions were suspended.

The new season begins on September and runs until the end of May.

Wymondham Photographic Society.

ABOUT: We are a friendly and social group dedicated to enjoying the art and practice of photography, we are not a club focused purely on competition, although we do enjoy regular photographic competitions, both within the club itself, and with other regional clubs and federation wide.

We meet weekly on Tuesdays (excepting major holidays) from 8-10pm at the Wymondham Dell Bowls Centre during our season, which runs from September through to June. A full list of upcoming meetings and the yearly calendar are available on the clubs website, and from Google Calendars. Our spacious venue is easy to find, has parking facilities and is equipped with a full bar which also serves tea and coffee. The bowls club also make available to us a large permanently installed projection screen which was chosen specifically to complement to our club's new high definition wide-screen digital projector.

Meetings can take many forms, from competitions to tutorials, guest speakers or audio/visual presentations, workshop evenings where members bring along images for advice and suggestions, and location outings.

We welcome those of all abilities, from beginners to experts, our aim is to enjoy photography and nurture and inspire each other so that we can all get the most from this pastime. Digital or Film? It doesn't matter. The end result is a photograph, and that's what counts. You don't need the latest fully featured Digital SLR camera to join in, we have members using all kinds of cameras, from smart-phones to large format film cameras! If you're stuck with something you don't understand, someone will be able to help, we have a wealth of knowledge and experience in our members who are always happy to lend a helping hand.

New members are always welcome, and we encourage you to come along to a meeting and get a feel for what our club is about. Contact our "Membership" committee member and have a chat about coming to a meeting, it won't cost you anything, and we hope you'll decide to stay.

Other Events: (Open to non members)
